GLENDORA, Calif. (July 11, 2008) – NHRA announced today the members of its safety task force created to
investigate, analyze and determine ways to implement the initiatives recently outlined by NHRA to
continue to enhance safety.
The current task force is made up of NHRA officials and Top Fuel and Funny Car crew chiefs and conducted its
first conference call among its members earlier this week.
The task force is headed up by Dan Olson, NHRA director of top fuel and funny car racing. He is joined by:
Austin Coil, crew chief for John Force Racing; Jim Head, Funny Car driver/crew chief; Alan Johnson, crew chief
for the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster; Jon Oberhofer, crew chief for the Doug Kalitta-driven Top Fuel dragster;
Mark Oswald, co-crew chief on Melanie Troxel’s Funny Car; and Tim Wilkerson, Funny Car driver/crew chief.
Other representatives from NHRA and the Professional Racers Owners Organization (PRO) will also
participate.
“This task force provides a more structured process for NHRA, together with crew chiefs within the racing
community, to tackle emerging technical issues and find solutions to build upon the sport’s long standing
safety record,” said Graham Light, senior vice president of racing operations, NHRA. NHRA has convened
similar groups in the past and NHRA continually works with teams and the racing community on
various safety and performance-related issues.
Among the issues currently under discussion are: 1) what may be done to reduce engine failures; 2) parachute
mounting techniques and materials as well as identifying a parachute material that could be more fire resistant;
3) exploring whether there is a way to increase brake efficiency when cars lose downforce due to the loss of the
body;
4) analyzing additional methods that might be developed at the top end of the race track to help arrest runaway
vehicles; and 5) considering whether current speeds should be further limited or reduced to potentially improve
safety.
In addition to the task force, NHRA is working with other motorsports sanctioning bodies, outside consultants
and experts within and outside the motorsports world to investigate ways to address the recently announced
safety initiatives.

In an effort to ensure better track conditions, the Ultimate Gambler will run between rounds of
Saturday’s Run-for-the-Money events and first rounds for Sportsman and Pro Brackets. The Ultimate Gambler
will be completed prior to Saturday’s first round of Super Pro eliminations. The Ultimate Gambler will be run on
a 1/8-mile track, with 15 minute turn-around between runs. A pro ladder will be used for eliminations based on
a reaction-time qualifying run. No “splits” prior to the quarter-finals (final 8). All splits must be approved by
Chris Blair prior to the next round of competition. All participants must agree and sign off on the split. Only the
driver can agree to a split (no crewmembers or family members).
Basic competition information and procedures:
Listen to the announcers on 103.9 FM.
All Thursday, Friday and Sunday races will be contested on the ¼ mile. All Saturday races will be contested as
1/8 mile. Should weather or other unforeseen circumstances affect racing conditions, the director reserves the
right to adjust all races to 1/8 mile.
Driver must have dial-in properly displayed on left side of car prior to reaching the ready-line behind the tower.
Any car not having its dial-in displayed will receive the same dial-in as the previous round. If it is the first round,
we will make one up for you. No changes permitted to dial-in after the ready line unless approved by the event
director (in the event of an oil-down or other unforeseen circumstances).
Racers are permitted to buy-back once in eliminations (either first or second round). Cars who buy back are
automatically placed back into the elimination rounds. We do not separate buy-backs from winners. Please
be advised of this policy – it has been this way since 2001. Buy-back policy may be adjusted due to time
constraints, car counts, etc.
All lane choices will be determined by the flip of a coin.
Eliminations will be random pairings. Provisional bye for first round will go to the winner of the Run-for-the-
Money. All other provisional bye runs will go to the best reaction time on a winning run from the previous
round. Provisional bye does not carry over. The winner of the provisional bye does not get lane choice if he
does have to run with someone -- it still goes to flip of a coin.
All classes will receive a first call, a second call and a final call to staging. We are not responsible for someone
missing the call to the lanes. The class ends when the provisional bye winner reaches the ready-line for either
his single or paired run. Don’t come to the lanes at the last minute and expect to race.
Once a pair has been made at the ready line the race is set. Any delays, breakages, etc. past the ready-line
will result in disqualification.
Participants will have approximately 35 seconds from the start of burn-out to stage the car. In an effort to save
time, burnouts past the 60 foot mark will not be permitted. Auto-start will be used. If you plan on staging deep,
don’t write it on your window and expect us to wait for you – just get into the beams. We do not enforce
“courtesy staging” for this event – again, just get in the beams.
Left lane receives the right-of-way in exiting the track.
In the late rounds of eliminations, all classes will be on a 10-min. turn-around. It is November, so there shouldn’
t be an issue with cool-down time.
Please listen to the public address system on 103.9 FM. We don’t want you to miss a round.
We have put implemented fairly simple rules for this event in an effort to have a good time. We want to keep
things simple, follow the same program we’ve used for a long time and close out the year on a high note. For
that reason, we ask that you focus on having a good time. If a driver has a concern or a complaint, the driver
needs to be the one to come to the tower. Do not send your family or crew to act as your spokesperson. We
will only address issues with the driver.
Read this sheet and listen to the public address system on 103.9 FM.
Entry information

Pro weekend advance – $225.
Sportsman weekend advance – $125.

increase by $100.
Entry forms will be posted on www.LVMS.com starting Aug. 15, and will be mailed to all previous Bracket
Nationals participants by Sept. 1.
LVMS will provide a space for racers participating in either the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event (November
7-9) or Street Car Super Nationals (November 21-23) to leave their rigs until the start of the Bracket Nationals.
We understand that fuel prices are greatly affecting everyone’s racing plans and want to work with our
participants to keep them racing at all Strip events.

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway announces
“Three-in-a-Row” bonus incentive
LAS VEGAS – The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will award special bonuses to drag racers who compete
in the May 31, June 7 and June 14 Jerry’s Nugget Championship Drag Racing Series events.
Special points bonuses will be paid to the driver/rider in each category who earns the most points over the
three-race period. The racer who earns the most points in the Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle
classes will receive a special-edition trophy, an LVMS jacket, a 10 lb. roll of bologna (provided by Cliff Ricci of
Outwest Meats in Las Vegas) and a loaf of sandwich bread.
"With today’s high gas prices, we need to give everyone a little extra incentive to get out of the garage and
come to the races," said Chris Blair, LVMS’ vice president of racing operations. "If the opportunity to win a
trophy and a jacket doesn't give them enough incentive to come to the track, then maybe the chance to be full
of bologna will."
In addition to the awards and the “gourmet meal,” LVMS also will provide racers an onsite parking area to leave
their rigs between races. At the end of each event, racers will check in with LVMS security and move their
haulers to the designated storage area.
"We have dozens of racers who travel from Southern California, Northern Arizona and Utah to race with us
each week and we want to do whatever we can to keep them racing," Blair added. "When people are towing as
much as 335 miles one way to race, the fuel bills can be outrageous. Several teams are planning to tow their
rigs to the speedway and then carpool home together between races to ease the fuel bill."

Midnight Mayhem Presented By MetroPCS Dog Days Street Showdown
Aug. 1 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
LAS VEGAS – Midnight Mayhem Presented By MetroPCS – The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s popular
street-legal drag racing program – will present an exciting new competition on Friday, Aug. 1. The new Dog
Days Street Showdown will pair the fastest street-legal cars in Las Vegas to determine – once and for all – who
is the “top dog” in Las Vegas. On Aug. 1, during Midnight Mayhem Presented By MetroPCS, the fastest cars in
Las Vegas will shoot it out in four thrilling rounds of drag racing action.
Qualifying: Midnight Mayhem participants whose cars run faster than 115 mph during events on either June 13
or June 20 will earn an invitation to compete on Aug. 1. As soon as the car posts a top speed of 115 mph or
faster in the quarter mile, it will be inspected to ensure it has DOT-approved tires and a street-legal exhaust
system.
Eligibility: Open to any eligible Midnight Mayhem participant driving a street-legal car. Car must have DOT-
approved treaded tires (no slicks) and a muffled exhaust system (no open headers). Car must be driven to the
track on the night it qualifies as well as the night of Aug. 1. Car cannot be unloaded in the parking lot – it must
enter the LVMS property under its own power. Program is not open to motorcycles. All other rules are off the
table – and the use of nitrous oxide is encouraged.
Race format: All racers earning an invitation to the event will receive free admission and a line pass for early
entry on Friday, Aug. 1. That evening’s Midnight Mayhem program will begin with one round of qualifying at 8:
30 p.m. The 16 cars with the best elapsed time (E.T.) from qualifying will be placed on a ladder for
eliminations. Elimination rounds will take place during Midnight Mayhem with the first round (16 cars) at 9:30 p.
m. Quarterfinals will take place at 10:15 p.m., semi-finals at 11:30 p.m. and finals at 12:15 a.m. The race will
use a heads-up start on a .4 pro tree with the first-to-the-finish-line winning.
Prizes: The Top Dog champion will receive a jacket, a championship trophy and $1,000 cash. The runner-up
will receive $250 and a trophy.
